What is the purpose of this study?
As traffic volume and congestion grows on I-35 there are only very limited transportation
options available to residents and travelers. Many believe it neither practical nor preferable
to just add more capacity to I-35. Transit service is viewed as part of the solution, but
current transit options are extremely limited. This study will evaluate a range of transit
options and identify the option(s) that best meets the needs of the corridor.
How do you define the I-35 "corridor" for this study?
We’re looking at I-35 through Johnson County to downtown, Kansas City, Mo. In addition to I-35
and its interchanges in Johnson County, the study area includes feeder roads and streets that
have a direct impact on the traffic capacity of I-35. However, the traffic analysis will be
limited to I-35 and those areas with a proposed transit improvement.
How long is the study expected to take?
The project timelines calls for a "Locally Preferred Alternative" for public transportation to
be recommended by the end of 2005.
Who is funding this study?
The study is required per Federal Transportation Administration (FTA) guidelines in order to
secure federal funds to implement a solution. Funding for this study comes from the Kansas
Department of Transportation and from Johnson County.
Can't you just build more lanes on I-35?
Some improvements to I-35 are programmed and funded, but a lack of easement will restrict the
widening of the roadway for additional lanes.
What happened to the Commuter Rail Study from a few years ago?
Commuter Rail service using BNSF-owned tracks that parallel I-35 has been regarded as a
desired transit option. Johnson County started preliminary engineering for Commuter Rail in 2000,
but the cost of track capacity improvements and other concerns gave rise for the consideration of
other transit option. Commuter Rail remains one of the transit alternatives given consideration
in this study.
